Monoprint Portraiture: Capturing Impressions and Self-Empowerment in Ink
Help me give my students the experience of creating beautiful, large, hand-colored, one-of-a-kind monoprint portraits on RFK Rives Printmaking Paper to raise money at our annual school auction.
With these high-quality printmaking supplies of heavy-weight printing paper, water-soluble crayons, and gum arabic, my students will produce dramatic, richly colored, one-of-a-kind portraits on our press to match their artistic intentions of portraying young artists with pride and grace.
These unique materials combined provide incredibly easy-to-make, yet very sophisticated-looking finished prints, ideal for building confidence and resiliency in young printmakers.
Our class community is a diverse group of students getting to know each other. They bravely shared collages about their various countries of origin, cultures, passions, interests, religious beliefs, racial backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations with each other. Next, we will group up to interview and photograph each other.
Students will be introduced to Kehinde Wiley, and discuss how this important black artist staged his portraits to emphasize the individual's sense of empowerment. Students will discuss how young people are seen in society today, and be asked, how would you depict a young person in your artwork that would elevate them to make them look: graceful, proud and/or nobel?
We will use our staged photographs of each other as references to draw our class portraits on plexi-glass plates, and then run them through the press on heavy weight paper multiple times. We are hoping to hang these in our school, and sell at our annual auction to celebrate and support our community! Thank you for considering our art project.
