My Students

My students come from all over the world and are eager to learn. I teach students who are learning English in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. My assistant works with the English learners in Kinder through 5th grade! These students are working hard in their regular classrooms to learn English at the same time they are learning, math, science, social studies, reading and writing! Students that are just beginning to learn English need more support and are pulled into small group rooms for additional support

I support almost 60 students in ten regular classrooms.

They speak 11 different languages and represent 14 different countries. Students range from beginners to intermediate English language learners. I love seeing the progress these students make. They appreciate every moment we spend with them and any resources we can bring their way.

My Project

I am requesting the tools I need to have a dual monitor setup. My district supplies teachers with a laptop that offers the ease of portability, but the screen size has its limits. I spend hours planning lessons for my students, who are learning English while simultaneously learning grade level content. I often have many resources in front of me. Having access to a dual monitor will make my lesson planning much more efficient. I will be able to refer to WIDA language standards, state standards, district curriculum, and other resources alongside the virtual learning platform I am building instruction on. Students are interacting with content through Seesaw, Google, Canvas, Flipgrid, Zoom and other platforms. Not only will my planning benefit from this, but my live virtual instruction will be improved as well .

One of the most important skills for a teacher to possess is the ability to gather information and make instructional decisions in the moment.

Timely feedback has been proven to be one of the most effective teaching techniques to improve student success. Doing all this through a computer screen is challenging. With this project I will use the dual monitor to watch my students' faces and use my other screen to share instruction. Being able to observe student engagement by looking at students' facial expressions and body language will allow me to make those in the moment decisions. I will be able provide immediate feedback and improve the instruction I'm giving. Providing supports is a complicated process. I need to be able to observe student behavior and then determine if additional language supports are need for my English language learners to access the grade level content.
