This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are highly motivated and passionate about the health field. They enjoy working with their hands and raising awareness of health conditions. Many students are also part of a health community service club - HOSA, that I also advise. They often volunteer their time and labor to assist with various health-related walks/marathons throughout the year and at the local nursing home/elderly hall. The students are eager to learn more about the human body and put into practice the skills and knowledge they have gained in the classroom.

My students are future health professionals.

They are primarily Filipino and many come from an immigrant background. The students also face financial challenges. As a teacher at a Title I school, I have seen my students have to choose between some experiences because of financial hardship. I wish to provide experiences within my classroom that will help them to achieve their goals and gain skills that they will need for their future careers.

My Project

Many students are intrigued by the brain but measuring its activity can be difficult.

A brain wave monitor and EKG can give students insight into the functioning of the body.

The students often develop science fair projects that deal with a person's mental state. But it is hard to measure with commonly available equipment. An EKG and the electroencephalogram (EEG) are ways to attempt to gather data. This will give students concrete data to analyze rather than just relying on surveys.

As another added benefit, in addition to science fair, the materials can be used for students to monitor their own mental health. The headband contains the EEG sensor as well as a pulse oximeter. It can be used for students who are learning to calm their mental state. The headband gives feedback to help calm persons that are experiencing stress as a reminder to relax and practice altering their brain waves.
