Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It doesn't matter how old or young you are, learning how to save and manage money is vitally important. I want my students to start learning good financial practices now, so they can maintain these good habits in their adulthood.

My students are second graders attending a school located in a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.

There are 12 boys and 11 girls between the ages of 7 and 8. My students are full of energy and are eager to learn new concepts everyday. However, a lot of times, because of economic hardship, their parents have two jobs to be able to support their family. Lacking time to spend with them and educate them on vital concepts like money.

My Project

Teaching elementary students about money can sometimes be challenging. Many times, students have difficulty grasping the concept of money, let alone all of the complicated financial tools that have become a part of our everyday lives. Teaching children about money is so important and is a tool that they will need for the rest of their lives. Why not start them early? With the the set of ipod touch my students will by able to use a variety of apps and websites to help them learn about financial literacy. One of the apps my students will be able to use is a Quest to Clean Up. This app will facilitates financial education conversations, which can help kids learn some valuable lessons about money, in a language they can understand. Along with Learn to Earn When You Tend to Spend which will help my students understand the meanings of spending and earning and associate the correct mathematical function with each one.

It can be hard to get kids off their smart phones in this era of technology.

It can be just as hard to conceptualize financial education in a way kids can easily understand. With the set of ipod touch my students will be able to use the app Quest To Clean Up and research about financial literacy in websites such as Mymoney.gov and mint.org and be on their in becoming money conscious kids today.
