My students are an incredibly sweet, inquisitive group, always excited to learn new things. They ask a lot of questions when there is an opportunity to explore.
Our class mission statement is, "We will work together to have fun and be our best; we can make our dreams come true!" We wrote it together and repeat it every day.
They are great at supporting and encouraging each other.
Our school is a Title I school where over half receive free or reduced-price lunches. We are in a rural area, but my students all live in town. I have several ESL students. Their academic abilities range from considerably below grade level to well above grade level.
My Project
Second grade is a critical year for children to learn to count money. In first they learn what the coins are, and in third they no longer learn about money as part of their math curriculum.
Games help students learn faster than any other activity I have found!
These money counting games will give my students the experience counting coins that they so desperately need. Why do I say desperately? Since most people use debit cards now instead of cash, my students do not generally count coins at home very often. As a teacher, this scares me! Children must be able to accurately count coins, and practice thinking about how to spend money while they are young. All of the Financial Literacy lessons in the world cannot adequately prepare them to make wise decisions as adults without the early practice of using coins.
The magnetic manipulatives will be used during whole group lessons and board games can be played not only during math time, but also inside recesses and free time. They will give my students the hands on practice they need to be successful both as students and in life.
