Money Matters: Help Teach My Class the Real Value of Money
My students need puzzles, cash register, and money counting manipulatives to help them identify coins, read and represent coin values, and learn money problem solving skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kids love money, but unfortunately money is a very hard academic concept for a lot of students. Being able to identify and group coins is basically a complicated form of skip counting, and kids need lots of real-world, hands-on practice to be able to master these concepts at such a young age.
My class is made up of a diverse group of English-language learners from SW Denver.
Our school is almost entirely made up of a free-and-reduced lunch population, and many of my students come from families who are struggling to make ends meet. My students love coming to school, and feel at home in my classroom. I want to keep the learning materials I have for them fun, challenging, and relevant, and we desperately need money tools and manipulatives to help improve my student's financial literacy.
My Project
I am writing this grant to ask for a class set of play money for each student in my class. These would be used regularly to support our math curriculum and provide realistic manipulatives for kids who need the support in solving problems. I am also asking for a working cash register that my students can use in a math center that will focus on identifying needs vs. wants, and making change. Finally, I am requesting two math puzzle games that will be used in math centers to give students practice matching coins with their values, and representing values with different coin combinations.
These money tools would be a wonderful way for my students to practice improving their financial skills in a fun, and realistic way.
Please consider donating to this grant and helping my students move past just loving money, to actually understanding money! Thank you!
