This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Based on student needs, I want to create a classroom economy utilizing realistic money. Many fourth grade students struggle identifying different money and the equivalent denominations, a first grade Texas State Academic Standard. As dictated by the fourth grade level Texas State Academic Standards, students are required to add and subtract decimals, distinguish between fixed and variable expenses, and understand financial institutions services (checking, savings, loans).

A classroom economy creates a hands-on, real world, experience for students to bridge the gaps of money mastery and new financial literacy learning.

Students will earn money through varies classroom jobs and activities. Students will also learn fixed expenses by having to pay "rent" each month and "subscriptions" for specific recess extras. They will get an opportunity to purchase from the classroom store and may have to pay fees on occasion, this will address variable expenses.

Students will utilize checkbook ledgers to keep track of their money. They will track deposits and withdrawals by adding and subtracting decimals. They will have a checking account and a savings account for those bigger items they may want to purchase.

This hands-on project will take a deeper dive into financial literacy that is often not explicitly taught. It is my hope these life lessons will stick with them as they grow into the real world and be better prepared to handle their personal finances.
