We are a Title 1 School located in North Carolina.
Currently, we have decided as a grade level to teach the concept of money through our economics units in social studies since it is not clearly stated in our new math standards for the state of North Carolina. We feel it is important for our students to know the value of money and contemplate how money can be used wisely to benefit our economy. For this reason, we would like to expand on our economic unit by tying it into math concepts.
We would like to begin by explaining the concept of money on a small scale and increasing levels of difficulty and understanding as time goes on. This would happen during the course of our community unit earlier in the year. In order to achieve this goal, we would use a money overhead kit, money calculators, activity wallets, games and money match up flip books in small groups, in centers and in pairs to further this understanding of money and its value. Later we would use a magnetic mapping board and mapping skills overhead kit to help the children discuss what they know about how money is used in their communities. These resources provide pictures of places in their communities that can be moved to different areas of the map or off the map. Students would then be given a budget and a place in the community to uphold based on what they have financially. They would be allowed to purchase materials needed from other places on the map, make a profit, sell items, and be charged taxes. Students would have to see if they would be able to continue their business, or not based on their approaches in problem solving.
We would like to request all of the resources outlined in this proposal because students need to know how to manuevour in the world of economics. Your consideration on this proposal would benefit our students greatly.
