Money Mania Equals Financial Literacy

My students need 10 money resources, including games, puzzles, problem solving books and learning centers.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Pearson's classroom raised $419

"Show us the money!" This is a daily request in my first grade classroom. The students are so eager to learn to count money. Although only a few of them can name all the coins and their values, the entire class is eager to learn to do so and asks daily for "money lessons" and opportunities to "play" with the plastic coins and paper dollar bills which are the only money materials that we currently have available to us.

When I asked questions about their previous experiences with money in order to assess the background knowledge the children brought with them to school, I began to understand the challenges we face. It seems few families handle cash on a daily basis. The children reported seeing their parents write checks to pay bills, and use credit or debit cards when out shopping. Lunch money is not handled daily, rather the parents deposit money into their child's account and the children enter a PIN as they pass through the lunch line. It is my new understanding that even the Tooth Fairy now leaves at least a one dollar bill! So, while my students may have a vague idea of more abstract money concepts, they lack coin counting skills and understanding of basic financial literacy.

The resources that we need are hands-on materials, games, and learning centers so that the children can have concrete experiences with money. They need many opportunities to count, add, subtract, save, and spend money in the classroom so that they can learn basic financial literacy and problem-solving skills to apply in the real world. Also, importantly, their learning will meet local, state, and national educational math standards and prepare the students to succeed on upcoming standardized tests.

Your support will enable my students to play games, enjoy activities, and simulate real world saving and shopping situations. Even more critical than providing them with engaging, authentic learning experiences, you will be helping to prepare our youngest consumers with a strong foundation in financial literacy. Thanks in advance for your consideration of our request!
