My students need realistic games, using money, to help them generalize skills acquired in the classroom. They need base 10 blocks to add and subtract with regrouping.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are aware that money makes the world go around, but require the skills to use money in the real world. My students receive dollars as a reinforcement for "being caught doing something amazing". They work hard earning the dollars, but require assistance when it comes to making the purchase.
My students are kind, hard working, and cooperative middle school children, with intellectual disabilities.
Our school is a Special Education Title I school, in Manhattan. Many of my students struggle academically, and are alternately assessed. My goal, for my students, is for them to be able to generalize what they learn in school, and transfer the knowledge to home and community.
My Project
These resources, I am asking for, will ultimately allow my students to make money exchanges correctly in stores, restaurants, doctor offices, and for transportation. While in the classroom, students will make purchases at the classroom and school stores independently. They will learn the method of dollar up, and be alert to the correct amount of change they should receive. When ready, students will be brought on field trips to local stores and restaurants, to generalize the skills.
Your donation will allow my students to engage in learning by playing games, while acquiring lifelong skills.
I want to be confident that when my students graduate, they will be self-sufficient in handling their assets, and will not be taken advantage of when making simple purchases. Managing money is an important skill, in many aspects of independent living.
