Money Is Gross?

Help me give my students 30 World Almanac and Book of Facts books for the school library.

My Students

Who are my students? We are a Title I school. We are also a school of choice. Students are not required to have a certain test score to get in or maintain a certain grade. We require that parents volunteer every semester.

Our students are avid readers.

Watching them run to the library is both exciting (as a librarian) and troubling (students are supposed to walk in the hallways). However, I love their enthusiasm for reading and that enthusiasm communicates to me that I'm doing my job.

My Project

How is money gross? Every school year, students are introduced to research. Because students think that Google is a research tool, I focus on print resources.

The World Almanac and Book of Facts is a great resource, especially when it's current.

It’s a big book, but I find fun statistics for the students. I select the list of 50 top-grossing movies from the almanac. Students find their favorite movie and they learn how much money it made or grossed. Students don’t understand why I say “gross.” But when I explain that “gross” is a multiple meaning word that, also, refers to an amount of money a movie earned, then, they get that money is gross.
