My Students
It is very important to me that my students are well grounded in sound reading, writing, and math skills. I know these skills will help them in their further education and in their careers. Another important skill is managing finances.
My students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
Many of them speak two languages fluently. Even though they have many differences, they all share a curiosity and interest in the world they live in. They live in a world that has an organized economy. The more I can teach my students about economy and how to manage their own finances, the better they will be prepared to be responsible citizens.
My Project
Our fifth grade team is preparing a three week unit that will engage our students in a mock economy. They will have a bank account, a paycheck, and bills. They will learn how to balance their bank accounts, budget their money, handle credit, and learn the importance growing a savings account. This magazine will be one of the items that the students must plan for in their budgets. They will get experience in financial planning, and they will also get a wonderful resource for learning critical reading skills.
It is not enough just to tell my students about how to take care of their finances.
They need firsthand experiences in managing their money so they will always remember the lessons. Having enough materials for them to rent and buy will give them the experiences of handling finances in the safe environment of our classroom. The lessons learned now may save them difficulties in the future as they learn the importance of monitoring their money.
