Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school district has a high ELL population. In the elementary school (pre-K – 4), 73% are ELL students. As of 2018, 60% of our students receive free lunch and 20% receive reduced lunch. Our community has two large manufacture plants and large farms that attract families to the area.

Our students are diverse.

They have different cultural backgrounds and families. We have students from different cultures and they learn to assimilate in our school environment. Our students range in ability as well. We have students with different academic, physical, and emotional needs and we encourage inclusion and understanding with all of our students.

My Project

When children engage in store play, they often exhibit a very basic concept of the exchange of money for goods. They know money is used to buy things. From that basic knowledge and understanding, I can use the opportunity to teach my students about money and financial literacy in a developmentally and child friendly way.

With this kit, I can further help develop my students’ understanding of money by connecting it to real world experiences by taking a trip to the grocery store to browse groceries and if budget allows, purchase groceries.

I want to create more opportunities for dramatic play. In this center, the students will have a functioning cash register and shelves fully stocked with groceries. Each grocery item will be priced.
