Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every year our kindergarten through third grade students read and vote for their favorite Monarch book. The Monarch Award: Illinois’ K-3 Readers’ Choice Award, sponsored by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators, is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children’s books, authors, and illustrators. During library classes throughout the year, students read the 20 Monarch nominated books and library lessons and activities are centered on the Monarch nominees. Then in March students vote for their favorite Monarch book.

Reading and sharing the Monarch books is a favorite for students!

This project will help us obtain the complete list of the 2025-2026 Monarch nominees. Students clamor to check out the Monarch books after we read a book as a class. This project will ensure our school library has two copies of each book to continue the excitement of reading the Monarch nominees.

It is fun to see which book will be the ultimate winner in each classroom, grade level, and ultimately in the state. My students love participating in this program and they feel empowered that they have a role in determining the state winner.
