Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book to a parent, sibling, or other family member? Each day, my 30 enthusiastic first graders beg to take home beloved books to share with their families. I have created take-home literacy bags for my students, but they are in major need of an overhaul!

I teach in an urban community in northern Illinois.

Nearly 100% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and over half are English Language Learners. Very few of my students have even a single book at home to share with their loved ones. Despite a lack of literature at home, these students are eager learners and avid readers, excited to read a new book or to revisit a favorite story to talk about what the author is trying to teach us or how he wants to make us feel. Many parents want to get involved in their child's schooling, but they are not sure how. To help improve reading at home, I have invested a great deal of time and resources to make take home literacy bags. These bags contain several books on a particular topic, some materials like play money or a "reading buddy" that relates to the topic, and a notebook for parent and child reading responses. The problem is the canvas bags that hold our books are well-worn, dirty, and not water-resistant.

My Project

With your donation of 40 School-To-Home Organizers, my students will have clean pouches that protect the take home literacy bag materials my students beg to check out each week. These organizers have two large pockets - one that can hold all of the books for each topic, and the other for the reading response notebook, supply list, and other materials. Each organizer has a space to clearly label the contents of each take home literacy bag, which will allow students to check out their bags more independently. Because the organizers are water-resistant, our books will not get damaged, which means more children will be able to benefit from the take home literacy bag program in our classroom. When more children check out these bags, more families can read together and truly make literacy and learning a family event. The list of benefits goes on and on!

Your support of this project will change the lives of my students and their families.

You will make it possible for my students to enjoy their favorite stories at home and share their love of reading with their families.
