This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book to a parent, sibling, or other family member? Each day, my 30 enthusiastic first graders beg to take home beloved books to share with their families. I have created take-home literacy bags for my students, but they are in dire need of organization!

I teach in an urban community in northern Illinois.

Nearly 100% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and over half are English Language Learners. Very few of my students have even a single book at home to share with their loved ones. Despite a lack of literature at home, these students are eager learners and avid readers, excited to read a new book or to revisit a favorite story to talk about what the author is trying to teach us or how he wants to make us feel. Many parents want to get involved in their child's schooling, but they are not sure how. To help improve reading at home, I have invested a great deal of time and resources to make take home literacy bags. These bags contain several books on a particular topic, some materials like play money or a "reading buddy" that relates to the topic, and a notebook for parent and child reading responses. The problem is that we do not have a safe, organized place to store these coveted materials.

My Project

With your donation of a mobile book cart, our take-home literacy bags can easily be organized. The mobile book cart has six sections that can each hold numerous books. Each section can be color coded to match a color coded dot on the literacy bags. This will enable me to sort the literacy bags into theme sections, which in turn will make it easier for students to find the bag they are looking for. By organizing these literacy bags in a study cart, my students will be able to independently check out their literacy bags and return them to the appropriate spot. Our literacy bags will stay in tip-top condition, which will enable more families to check out the bags and make literacy and learning a family event.

Your support of this project will empower my students to be independent and organized.

They will be better able to check out their own literacy bags, thus taking ownership of this process. You will help make it possible for my students to enjoy their favorite books at home and share their love of reading with family and friends.
