Moldy Movie Stars

My students need a camcorder to create environmental science videos that express their individual creativity while pushing their scientific inquiry skills.

My Students

"How fast does mold grow?" "What is happening to that fish's tail?" Perhaps the best answer an environmental educator could give is, "I don't know? What could you do to find out?" Often our teaching is geared toward giving answers rather than helping students develop scientific inquiry skills.

My students are a respectful and kind group of fourth graders in a high poverty, rural, Northern Michigan farming community.

They are inquisitive, creative students whose limits are only the ones we put on them with time and financial constraints. My students work together with a level of collaboration that could be the envy of many adult working teams. Give them a challenge and an open door, and they will find ways to open it that you and I would never imagine. It's a joy to facilitate their collaborative learning every day!

My Project

Using time-lapse photography with a camcorder, my students could answer some of their questions. While studying producers, consumers and decomposers, we could watch mold actually grow. What is the average length of time before bread molds? What variables influence it? How long will it live before it eats itself out of house and home? Is that fungus that is eating away the tails of some of our fish in our classroom aquarium or is there bullying going on after we leave the classroom for the night? Is that beansprout's growth linear or does it experience growth spurts just like the ten-year-olds in our classroom. Using time-lapse photography on a camcorder, these questions can be answered and we can create student-narrated videos to share our research with others. Not only will these videos motivate and enhance the learning of my current students, they will be archived for future students to watch in years to come.

We can only imagine the scientific, environmental challenges our students will face in their lifetimes.

They are challenges that we do not know the answers to. They are challenges that will be solved by students who know how to ask questions, search for answers and communicate their knowledge with others. A camcorder will allow my students to step into the future.
