it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." A day in my class typically starts with high-five and a bright "GOOD MORNING!" While enjoying breakfast in the classroom, we share stories about our weekend or the night before. My 4th, 5th, nd 6th-grade students come to class with the eagerness to learn!
When they walk into the classroom, they have an opportunity to truly be themselves, whether it be expressing themselves through arts, sports, or sharing their love for mathematics.
I have 17 wonderful students in my Special Education classroom. The students in my classroom have disabilities ranging from Specific Learning Disabilities to Autism Spectrum Disorder to Emotional Behaviors. In addition, 10 of my 17 students are English Language Learners. My wonderful school is located in the heart of South Los Angeles, and many of the families are considered low-income. Within the neighborhood, the students are exposed to a variety of challenges on a daily basis (gang violence, poverty, drugs, etc.). However, none of these factors hinder their passion for learning.
My Project
My 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade students have been working on research projects! The research projects incorporate English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Theater, and Art! The next research project my students will be working on is called "Our Heroes!". This project is very exciting because the students will research a specific person (using technology), write about the person, DRESS-UP as the person, present their projects, and as a culminating assignment, the students will use the clay to mold the person! Additionally, my students just wrapped up a research project about animals, so they will be able to utilize the clay to mold the animals they've researched (i.e. cheetahs, spider monkeys, panda, etc.).
Let's enhance my student's LOVE of art through various mediums!
The clay will allow my students to steer away from the typical paper/pencil/paint crafts-- but a more hands-on art activity using molding clay! My students are very creative and enjoy hands-on activities. Clay is a perfect art format for them to explore!
Additionally, since my students have special needs. Clay can help with fine motor skills! The can also be utilized a calming activity for when my students are having difficulty!
