This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Pre-Kindergarten is a wonderful year for young students. Pre-Kindergarten means music, movement, and many creative experiences. We all learn best by doing. I want to help my students have many opportunities to actually do things with their hands, have fun, and learn at the same time.

The enrollment at our school is range of cultures, backgrounds, experiences, challenges and abilities.

However, once through the doors, there is a real sense of community, mutual respect and friendship. Our school is located in a predominantly low-income neighborhood, which means that many of our students may not have access to many of the materials outside the classroom as students in surrounding communities. Unfortunately, our school funding leaves little room for new materials, and many of our classrooms are missing some of the essentials materials needed in a Pre-K classroom.

My Project

My students need Play-Doh and Play-Doh kits for hands on, creative experiences, so that they learn their letters, numbers, shapes, and develop stronger fine motor skills. Some of my students have not learned their written name, letters, sounds, or numbers. I want my children to have fun ways to learn their names and letters. It is so much more engaging to create your name in play-doh than to just sit and write it on paper. You learn more through actively doing, than just passively writing on paper. Creating your name or stamping the alphabet in play-dough is engaging and helps the student learn and remember.

My students will be able to stamp the alphabet, match upper and lower case letters.

We will be able to do math activities in a concrete way to help master one to one correspondence. The list goes on and on. While they are 'playing' in the play-dough, they will also be strengthening their fine motor skills which will help them be able to do paper and pencil activities in higher grades.
