Math is often not the favorite subject of students, especially in middle school. I am working to change this mindset through the use of project and game-based learning.
I aim to make learning math manageable, memorable, and meaningful to students.
Learning should not be all pencil and paper, but it should allow students to explore their learning in a variety of ways. One of my favorite ways to assess student learning is project-based learning. Letting students use the arts and their own forms of creativity to demonstrate their learning is always fun for the students and allows a different perspective for their classmates to view the material. Allow students to create posters, children's books, comic strips, songs/parodies, whatever they can think up and create. Some imagination, some math, and some supplies can truly enhance the learning of students.
Another way to encourage learning is through games and activities. Included in my project are a variety of games that can be used to enhance the learning of students that will enforce what is being learned in the classroom.
Many of the materials included in the project will be used with our final project of the year. The project focuses on financial literacy and making smart budgeting decisions in the real world while enforcing the concepts learned throughout the year. Students use equations to make the most economic decision with money management and not simply look for the "cheapest upfront cost". Students are given a variety of circumstances that they have to use their knowledge of budgeting and money management to handle based on their income, expenses, and their living situation within the scenario. At the end, students give a short report on what they learned, what they found easy/difficult, and what they would change in the end.
