My Students

Most people fall into one of two categories: They either love math, or they hate it. But it doesn't have to be like that! If we can get students engaged and interested in math at an early age and see how truly exciting and useful it can be, we can begin to eliminate the latter category.

My vibrant, enthusiastic first graders truly enjoy coming to school and learning each and every day.

They live in the heart of Washington, DC, and attend a charter school devoted to rigorous academics in order to compete in high achieving high schools and eventually college. Living in our nation's capital gives my students many opportunities. There are high schools geared towards special subjects and numerous colleges and universities in the area that will allow these students to pursue whatever dreams they wish to pursue. Giving them the tools now to lock in their love of learning will help them attend all of the area's higher education facilities. These students are truly eager to learn and soak up any information they can; now they just need the tools to do so in an engaging and enjoyable manner.

My Project

In order for the US to compete with the other mathematically strong countries of the world, we need to start making math a large priority in the younger grades. My first graders love their math centers, but doing the same ones over and over can get quite boring. We need new and engaging centers that will allow them to grasp difficult math concepts in a non-threatening way. They won't even know they are learning because they will be having so much fun! We can use the exciting, enchanting, captivating read aloud books to introduce a lesson or to reinforce a concept we already discuss. We will use the colorful Unifix cubes to make patterns, compare numbers, estimate, and maybe even to build spaceships and skyscrapers! The new math activity centers will allow the students to independently practice the strategies and skills they have learned in whole group instruction by applying them to the games. They will also work on cooperative learning and sharing!

Most people either love math or they hate it.

I want to eliminate the latter by immersing my students in everything math. I want them to enjoy coming to math class and delight in learning new math concepts that they can apply to their everyday lives. It is crucial for students to have a solid foundation in math before they can build upon it and take it to new levels. These new resources will allow the students to gain that foundation and take it with them throughout their educational careers.
