Molding Fun With Playdough and Kinetic Sand

Help me give my students playdoh and kinetic sand so they can use their imaginations and strengthen the small muscles in their hands as they learn.

My Project

Playdough supports development and learning in many areas. When children use playdough, they explore ideas and try different approaches until they find one that works. They compare and contrast objects ("Mine’s a fat pancake and yours is skinny”), actions ("No, don’t cut it! Scrape it, like this”), and experiences ("We’re not making a snake—we’re making a road”). In their experimenting, children come up with their own ideas, satisfy their curiosity, and analyze and solve problems. Kinetic sand supports development and learning as well. When children use kinetic sand they are being creative and imaginative. They are developing problem-solution skills as they create and correct. They are developing the small muscles in their hands. These are all skills that help children learn and succeed in school.

I know children learn best through play.

Playdough and sand are really fun tactile experiences that engage children and keep them attending on a task for a while. I am looking forward to students rolling out letters in their name, making shapes and fossilizing dinosaur bones so they can do an "archaeology dig" to learn about a prehistoric time.
