This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This summer our school lost a lot of material due to mold. One of the many things lost to the mold was our classroom carpet. The carpet is where the center of learning takes place in our classroom. Our students come to the carpet to start their day as well as end their day. We share stories, learn new things and become a family on this carpet. For most of my kids, this is their first experience in school. Transitioning into a classroom from a home environment may be difficult for some of them. When they enter the classroom, I want them to feel that they are welcome and school is a warm and comfortable place. Without a carpet, our classroom looks bare and not as welcoming.
My Project
Having a carpet for the kids to come and gather for a morning meeting and story time makes the learning environment more comfortable and welcoming. When the students have to sit on a hard and cold floor, they may not be ready to learn. Having a carpet for the students to sit on also will make the classroom more cozy and welcoming. I believe they will be more willing to participate in classroom discussions and will feel like they have a space of their own when they come to the floor. This carpet not only provides a place for morning meeting, but it is also a place where the kids can come when they are enjoying a book during reading block or making pictures with pattern blocks.
