Mold a Word

My students need Wikki Sticks, foam, Play Doh, letter cards, and letter stamps to practice making high frequency words.

My Students

Do remember when having to write words on paper over and over again to "learn" them? Well, I do and I remember hating it. I don't think it was all that effective either. I want my students to learn how to read and spell the high frequency words, but I want to do it differently!

I have an amazing group of first graders who are eager to learn.

They love to sing, learn, and play. (We try to incorporate singing and playing when learning.) Our school is located in a small farming community in Illinois. Our school has an extremely high number of students on free and reduced lunches.

My Project

I would like to use the Wikki Sticks, Play Doh and foam for my students to mold the high frequency words. Students have to use multiple senses when making these words, which will increase the likelihood that these words will be committed to their long term memory.

In first grade you are setting not only the foundation for learning, but the foundation for students' views on education.

Giving my students a solid foundation where they can use multiple senses for learning will help them as they progress through their educational career. It is also my goal to create lifelong learners. If I can make learning fun for my students, I believe that they will continue to seek out ways to learn for the rest of their lives.
