Our classroom is made up of a culturally diverse population in a Title 1 school in Brooklyn. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and many of them do not have the luxury of personal technology, nor do they have access to any internet services at home.
Our ICT classroom is made up of some of the most wonderful learners, who strive to be the best student they can be.
Many of our students are struggling readers and would benefit from the use of a story being read to them. Our students possess many different learning styles and the use of an iPad can help many of them with maintaining success relative to their struggles throughout the school day and in the school system.
My Project
Our school uses reading websites, as well as math websites, such as Raz Kids and Zearn, to enhance our curriculum. These websites will read to the children, give them activities to play to enhance their reading and mathematical skills, and quiz them on a specific skill they have been taught. It will also do reteach lessons with them to go over completed tasks to make sure their skills stay sharp. We encourage our students to use these websites at home and in school during center activity time. Many of our students do not have the luxury of technology at home, so they rely on being able to use these websites in school. Without any technology in the classroom, however, our students cannot use these websites which puts them at a disadvantage.
Having iPads and headphones in the classroom which could be used as a center, would benefit them in hearing how words sound, how to articulate their speech and conversation, and will give them extra practice in their math studies.
These iPads would greatly benefit our struggling readers, ESL students, as well as the other students in the classroom with their reading, math, and conversational skills.
