Virtual reality will always have a special place in my classroom. Throughout the years, I've worked to develop various ways that students can utilize it for STEM, art, and engaging activities. I've used it in math, science, ELA, and history class in countless ways, and I'm happy to be on the forefront of educators experimenting with ways to integrate it into our daily instruction.
Although I'm known for a famous VR math video, I'm most proud of the 3D Printed VR Art Sculptures that students have created in the past.
Virtual reality has allowed my students to be hooked on, and to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a completely different way than was available when I was a kid. I'm super happy to be able to share this passion with my class.
Some specific ways that we will use it for STEM/STEAM Projects are through apps like:
Figmin XR - Figmin XR is a fun multi-purpose application for easily creating, collecting & playing in augmented reality.
Arkio - Design interiors, buildings, virtual spaces and more.
Gravity Sketch - Gravity Sketch is a 3D design and collaboration tool that enables you to create vehicles, sneakers, furniture, characters, art, and more. Express your ideas with 3D strokes and geometry; solve complex design challenges working directly in 3D at any scale, all with a fun and intuitive toolset that makes working in 3D easy.
We have had multiple VR headsets funded through DonorsChoose including an Oculus Rift S, and a Oculus Quest Generation 1, both several years ago. They inspired a generation of students, but are both buggy & difficult to use to their age (which unfortunately moves fast- neither are supported by Meta anymore), and I'd love to get my current class a new headset that we can use.
