About My Students
My students like technology. They have learned how to use their phones, iPads and other tablet devices to collect data and perform calculations. They would like scientific calculators to practice using for state and federal exams.
My students have used cellular devices and tablets to collect data and calculate results. However, when the practice midterm was administrated, they were not allowed to use those devices for calculations. They were not familiar with the scientific calculators on exam day.
The students asked if they can get a classroom set to use through the year so they are familiar on test day.
Students need to be exposed and familiar with as many data collecting and calculating devices as possible. Trade school and college environments may have devices different from what was used in high school.
We are making students college and career ready by exposing them to multiple devices, even if it is something as simple as a calculator.
In Their Own Words
We want to be prepared for the state exam. When we took the benchmark and we could not use our phones for a calculator, it took time to figure out where the buttons were and how to perform functions.
Our goal is to be ready to use a lot of different ways to perform calculations.
The students in the class asked if we can get a grant to get a set of calculators. Mr. Case told us about Donors Choose and we decided to apply here.
We will pass out the calculators, keep inventory and return them daily so they will be in good shape for the next class.
If we are going to be ready for a job or for college, we need to be able to use a lot of electronics. Every phone, tablet and calculator is different. We can be ready for the next step by using a variety of electronic devices.
