My Students
My students love art, but lack some materials to create modern art. The paper will create vibrant images and the rulers will keep their work sharp- if that is the look they are seeking.
My third grade students attend a single school district in a rural part of California.
Our K-8 school is a Title I school with approximately 470 students. My 22 third graders love to be involved in all we do. At this time of year my students have become working machines- they collaborate well, are accepting of difference, and create some wonderful work. I work at keeping activities on task and with rigor. My students rise to the challenge.
My Project
My students need colored paper and rulers to create modern art. During our literature imagination unit I will meld a full unit in art. The visual components of color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value will be explored. The students will create a variety of projects: collage with line exploration with 3D items such as string, jute, glitter; another project uses a die-cut form done is hues using a variety of media, and another will create a picture mural using a variety of colored paper not unlike illustrator Eric Carle. The rulers will be used in all projects as they learn to measure in centimeters. Art lends itself to collaboration and this project will offer constructive development of these skills.

By piquing their imaginations and encouraging students to create several art pieces focusing on the elements of art, students grow in confidence. Students will also learn how to critique their own work and make constructive comments of other. These art lessons will further their enjoyment and hopefully keep them involved in art as they grow.
