My Students
Each day, approximately sixty first graders depend on me to teach them how to read. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich literature experiences ona day to day basis.
Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.
My Project
My students lack the resources to hear great reading. Listening to adults read fluently is a critical part to becoming a reader who uses expression and proper intonation. However, many of my students parents are unable to model great reading for them - whether they are working long hours or unable to read themselves. I want to provide lots of examples of great reading for my students by providing them with some high-interest texts that they can read along with on a listening center.
This project would allow my students to get excited about reading and access material they are unable to read on their own.
Our classroom is already equipped with a CD player and headphones for a literacy center, but does not have a strong variety of books on CD.
