My Project

My students love learning when they can connect math to the real world. In PreCalculus, we spend a lot of time working with exponential and logarithmic functions, but these concepts can feel abstract without a tangible application. By bringing renewable energy experiments into the classroom, I can give my students the chance to see how math describes the systems that power our world.

This project will provide solar panels, wind turbines, multimeters, and the TeacherGeek Maker Tool Class Set so students can design, build, and test their own renewable energy systems.

The solar kits will allow students to measure how light intensity and angle affect energy output, while the wind turbine kits will let them experiment with blade shape, length, and pitch. With the Maker Tool Class Set, students can cut, adjust, and reconfigure turbine blades safely and easily, empowering them to take ownership of the engineering process rather than relying on pre-built parts. They will then use PreCalculus to model their collected data with exponential and logarithmic functions, turning equations into a powerful tool for real-world analysis.

Hands-on projects like this help students see the relevance of what they’re learning while also preparing them for future careers. This project directly supports workforce development in engineering and technology by letting students practice the same design, testing, and problem-solving skills used in renewable energy careers. By experimenting, modeling, and analyzing, my students will gain both mathematical confidence and a vision for how their skills apply to solving real-world challenges in STEM.
