Modeling Mathematics

My Students

Being a Support Mathematics Teacher allows me the opportunity to utilize my background in mathematics as well as special education. I am able to teach students from grades 4-7 who are struggling the most with learning grade level mathematics. I typically work with about 8 students at a time in a small group setting that focuses on what they specifically need to help them reach the Common Core Standards.

Many of my students are coming from low-income households or are English language learner students.

Coming from a low-income household should not be an excuse for these students to not be successful in school and they deserve all the wonderful tools to help them be successful in math.

My Project

A key component of strong math instruction is modeling and guided practice in the classroom. This gives a teacher the chance to visually show how to solve a problem and model effective problem solving strategies.

Having large post-it chart paper and a stand white board will help me to clearly communicate my thinking and model mathematics strategies in the classroom.

These tools will help me improve my teaching practice by allowing me to have a better canvas for modeling math. In turn, my students have a better understanding of math in the classroom and that will lead to higher success in mathematics.
