Our team of four, fifth grade teachers works with immigrant students from around the world.
Where do we begin in describing our amazingly diverse, quirky group of fabulous fifth graders?
They love hands-on, action-packed, integrated projects and units of study, and they learn best from seeing and doing!
As we prepare our students for middle school, we employ a rotating-block schedule in which students travel to different teachers for reading, writing, math and science/social studies. We are hoping to end their final year of elementary school with an epic project!
My Project
Model rockets, along with the batteries, glue, recovery wadding and launch pads needed to build and launch them, make for an exciting project for students with much opportunity for expansion across all content areas. With the generous help of Donors Choose supporters, we are hoping to wrap up our students' elementary school career with a rocketry unit! Although our proposal seems pricey, please note that this project will include all seventy-six of our fifth grade students!
Our plan is to extend this project across the curriculum in May and June of 2019; students will study kinetic energy, force and motion, electricity, calculate angles and predict trajectory and will read and write about space travel and rocketry.
Our students thrive on hands-on activities that have real-world implications. The culminating event for our unit of study will be the launching of our model rockets, as we send our kids off to middle school with a bang!
