My Project
The picture books requested in this project have been shown to be some of the top runners for the 2022 Caldecott Medal, which will be announced at the end of January by the American Library Association. One of the skills I always teach my first graders is how the illustrations help tell the story. What better way to do that than to combine it with the national award, The Caldecott Medal!
Through this Mock Caldecott Project, students will analyze the illustrations in these picture books, determine how the illustrations help tell the story, and ultimately vote on the book they would want to win the Caldecott Medal for this year.
Students will practice reading for deeper meaning by listening to the words of the author and looking closely at the illustrations by the illustrator. They will begin the process of evaluating the pros and cons of each picture book. Then, based on their personal likes, their understanding of the words and illustrations, and their overall feel of the book, they will vote for their favorite.
We will culminate the project by watching the 2022 American Library Association awards ceremony via video recording on YouTube to see if any of our top choices win the national award!
