Mobile Whiteboards Bring Safe, Socially Distanced Collaborative Problem Solving

My Students

Our middle school is a wonderful school and I feel blessed to be teaching at it. My students come from all over a large suburban district and reflect the racial, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity of this district that spans eight cities/towns. Our school is a full-inclusion school, so I teach all students, including those in special education, gifted students, and English learners.

Students come from across our district for a safe and effective education.

They show up most days ready to learn and engage in activities. It can be tough at times because many of our students are working against the poverty that plagues some areas within our district. Our students face this daily and still show up ready to learn and thrive.

My Project

As our students return to the classroom for the first time in 15 months, I want to give them rich opportunities to engage in collaborative problem solving. Having the opportunity to work collaboratively heightens student engagement and mathematical discourse. Being able to write out their work on a highly visible location helps with transfer of knowledge among the students.

Working together outdoors will allow students to engage in rich mathematical tasks while remaining safe.

As part of our safe return, our district is creating protocols that will allow for optimal safety for students and staff. Having movable/mobile whiteboards will allow students to move our classroom outdoors and continue our work safely and productively.

Finally, and importantly, students will love high-quality Kleenex tissues to battle sniffles from allergies, common colds, and the occasional tears (it is middle school, after all). We can even use them to erase mistakes and start over in our problem solving, because mistakes are proof that thinking is happening!
