Mobile Technology for Literacy and STEM Enrichment
My students need an iPad Air 2, a protective case,and a Wi-Fi unlocked hot-spot to access the internet to enhance their education, while confined to the home or hospital.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom could start in a student's home or in a hospital, depending upon the individual student's medical condition and grade level. I might be teaching a first grader to read, working with an 11th grader in Chemistry, or working with a special needs student in life skills.
As a Hospital Homebound Teacher of 23 years, I have been privileged to teach some of the most fragile children in our county.
By program definition, I teach students who are catastrophically, psychologically, or chronically ill. These students suffer from a variety of illnesses such as leukemia, osteosarcoma, sickle-cell anemia, or bipolar disorder, to name a very few. Sadly, these students are not able to attend a regular school setting. As a teacher I strive to provide as "normal" a classroom setting as possible within their home or hospital environments. This requires a bank of available resources handy at all times to meet the specific academic needs of each student, since I can potentially teach EVERY grade level from Pre-K through 12 and ALL subjects. For some, the instructional time we have together is the most normal part of their day. And, although health and recovery are the primary outcome of their lives, we still strive to make progress towards learning goals everyday.
My Project
If my project is funded I will be able to access unlimited web-resources wherever I find my classroom to be in a given time frame. I will be able to support text-based materials with video and written support from a variety of online resources. It is one thing to read about the founding of Jamestown in a textbook, it is a whole other experience to access pictures, text, and video from the internet about the excavation of Jamestown by anthropologists and archaeologists, for example. It is my desire to expand my students' learning beyond the words in a book. Additionally, due to financial constraints, a number of my students do not have any internet access in their homes, so they are limited in their learning beyond the book, as well as being isolated in their homes or hospital.
This project could improve the lives of my students by expanding their worlds.
I will be able to improve my instruction by including unlimited internet resources to support textbook content and incorporate web-based instructional programs and applications. Additionally, I will be able to support student interests and curiosity in a much more responsive way. Answers to their individual questions can be answered in seconds. We will have greater flexibility and spontaneity within the classroom.
