My Students

I teach second grade inclusion at an elementary school on the Big Island in Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to economic backgrounds.

Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things.

Our school has been using a state mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum, because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are very limited.

My Project

Two years ago I started to transform my second grade classroom from a traditional setting to a flexible seating classroom. Flexible seating encourages my students to make decisions that will benefit their learning style the MOST! We are in need of 6 more flexible seating options to get our classroom to 100% flexible seating choices for ALL of my second graders.

These bright tractor stools are a favorite in my classroom because of it's bright color and it's ability to spin around 360 degrees.

These stools allow my students to easily turn around in their seats when they need to face the front of the classroom. My students love our current tractor stools and these new additions will certainly meet the needs of all of my students because they will replace the last remaining 6 traditional chairs that we will still have in our classroom.
