Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember what it is like to share a story and create an art work together with friends! Special ed. students and general elementary students will share a unit about recycling by using reusable bags to shop and strengthen their social ties and friendships during school ecology project.

Students are moderate/severe exceptional needs students in special day class at average elementary in low-income minority district.

Sharing meaningful lessons with mainstreaming shared lessons help them integrate, receive peer mentoring experiences in a fun environment. All students create reusable personalized clothe shopping bag to take home and share the lesson with their families while forming new friendships over a common cause- saving the planet!

My Project

Special selection of ecology grade-level books will be read aloud in class comprised of general ed and special ed students; reinforcing and modeling reading skills to ELL non-verbal K-5th exceptional students in multiple modes of language (English, Spanish, ASL). After mixed group reads ecology stories, together they will produce individually decorated reusable clothe shopping bags. Art tote bags will be displayed at school on informational bulletin board and then go home with students to keep the conversation of recycling continuing in the community. Reading and art integrate classes and grades and create a focal point to learn about recycling and environmental health.

All students need opportunities to socialize, form friendships, and learn together to strengthen their mutual understanding and respect.

Learning to support and respect our environment is a natural lesson to share. Our school has continually made efforts to support inclusion of the special population into mainstream activities of the elementary school. This project supports our special students growing ability to successful integrate in the community and participate appropriately.
