Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Making school a fun place to learn is so important because kindergarten is the foundation year of their education. The majority of students in my school are experiencing school for the first time and they are so excited to learn!
Many students are Spanish speaking and come from single parent homes in a low-income neighborhood.
I want to utilize all of the technology and resources that I have available to give my students real life, hands-on experiences to make their learning meaningful. I am setting my students up for success!
My Project
My students are beginning readers and getting them excited about reading can be challenging. However, having amazing books like Mo Willems’ Pigeon books available to my students makes all the difference! The Pigeon books are truly funny and engaging and my kids eat them up! Once I read one to the class, they keep asking for more.
These Pigeon books will increase student engagement, strengthen individual reading skills and support social-emotional learning.
My students will be eager to read these books at a free choice time...encouraging them to begin reading independently! I will also be able to utilize these books as part of my weekly writing lessons. For example, “Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late?”, would be a great book to use to talk about opinion writing!
It is my hope that my students exit my classroom loving to read and I am certain that this set of Mo Willems’ books will help me accomplish my goal!
