My students need valuable materials to help engage them in mathematics through creative projects involving real-world math problems.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students begin their first day mumbling "I hate math." It's a challenge to get my students to see that we use math everyday in sports, card games, shopping, and more! Math is fun, interesting, and not always about working from a huge textbook filled with thousands of problems. Math is everywhere!
I want to make learning math more interesting and inspiring for my students who attend a low-performing inner-city public high school.
As a math teacher to approximately 180 students each year, the majority of my students begin the school year "afraid" and "bored" of math. Often overwhelmed by their stressful home environment (example: foster care system, parent in prison, or friends in gangs) I try to counter their negative perceptions of mathematics by inspiring students to think of mathematics as a language and a gateway to a whole new world of possibilities. I achieve this with creative and engaging projects related to real-life problems. The discovery process helps students see value in what they are learning, especially necessary when most of them will be the first in their family to attend college. Not only do projects reinforce math skills and help develop conceptual understanding, it also allows students to be children, which they are.
My Project
The materials, such as construction paper, scissors, and glue sticks are basic supplies and yet difficult to come by. With these materials, students can actively create projects that will help my students be more involved with the math they are learning in class. My goal is to engage my students with collaborative activities, promote math language with written and oral communication of mathematics, and promote interest in real-life math with challenging math problems.
As a teacher for over 10 years at this same high school, I have learned that students will stretch their minds and learn higher-level concepts if they are hands-on and take ownership in their learning. These interactions and experiences are necessary to master the standards for the course.
M&M Village Under Attack is a rigorous and advanced story problem on exponential function relating to the spread of disease.
Students gather experimental data, graph the points, and use exponential and logarithmic functions to solve problems. Yet, with creative use of paper, colors, and glue, students discover that this challenge can be overcome collaboratively and creatively. This is just one of many projects I plan to give to my students. Thanks to you, I can make it part of their learning.
