Our school has a very diverse population with one major thing in common: low socioeconomic status. Our school is a Title I school where 80% of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. A majority of my students don't have access to proper tools, resources or educational reinforcement at home. I try to have as many resources available in the classroom so they can have the proper access to stay engaged and further the learning. We also have a large number of students that are English Language Learners, where English is not spoken at home. These students come from all over the world, some who are even refugees with limited resources. It is very hard to find materials that I can used to reach all academic levels and have relatable content in the classroom. Even though a majority of our students face many hardships throughout the year, our students are eager to learn as they have a sense of inclusion and community in our classroom.
Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" is a classic play that most of us have had to read in High School. But it was hard to relate to the time period, language and characters making it less enjoyable and not helping students who don't like reading already. With your help I can introduce my students to an updated version of an African-American girl in Cincinnati & Hispanic boy who wants to return to his home in Texas. This book will change their mind set and get them excited about reading novels.
Every student deserves to see themselves in the books they read.
Books have the power to encourage students while at the same
time enlighten other readers of the truths about lives they don’t live. These books become high interest because there relatable and self reflective in a day & age were we don't see this. Than reading becomes fun, exciting and the curiosity grows and they continue to grow stronger in reading.
The best way to teach love, inclusion and diversity is to read, read, read books like these! These high-interest, self reflective, life changings books will do just that.
