“Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination” (John Dewey)
My 3rd graders attend a very special school.
In our classrooms, they collaborate often within a diverse community, learn social-emotional skills and tools, develop deep inquiry skills, and build the habits of heart and mind that lay a foundation for empathy, critical thinking, and a love for self, others, and learning.
My Project
In our 3rd grade classroom, students engage in a multidisciplinary solar system unit in which they participate in a simulation that requires that prepare to "move to Mars." In this unit, students conduct research, study astronauts' biographies, test and create model parachutes for use in the thin atmosphere on Mars, implement the creative-process of engineers, as well as design structures, clothing, and tools to support human survival on Mars. This unit bridges the unnatural gap that schooling so often creates between art and science by integrating the arts, the imagination, and the act of creating with science education.
Our classroom needs more technology to help students conduct independent research on the planets, create presentations of their research, and design inventions. Tablets will ensure that each group of students has technology to work with throughout this project.
Tablets will ensure that all of my students are exposed to and learn about current-technology, support students' developing research skills, and provide an additional medium for creative projects.
