My classroom consists of students who are in first, second, third, and fourth grades. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners who have moderate to severe disabilities that include autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and speech and language impairments. My students come from all over the city of Chicago, making the class rich with diversity and culture.
No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, my students continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!
We are a Chicago Public School and our district continues to face financial difficulties. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from Donors Choose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!
My Project
I teach a special education program for diverse learners. Many of my students have autism. They require a lot of structure and routine within the learning environment. Task boxes are a very successful activity for my students; they're something my students can participate in independently. Task boxes are numbered bins that contain activities at varying levels. The students are assigned a number, they retrieve the numbered bin, and complete the activity.
My classroom is lacking both bins and a shelf to organize the materials in an accessible way to the students.
The shelf and bins will encourage independence within the students while teaching and reinforcing various skills. I realize this is a big expense; it's something that I cannot afford to purchase on my own, however, I know it is something that will be of great benefit to my students. Thank you so much for your consideration!
