My students need hands-on activities to inspire their busy minds with color, science-experiments, technology and creativity. I have seen a huge increase in engagement so far this year with science components as the focus.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a hidden gem in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Our students experience Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre, Music, Yoga and gymnastics every week. Allentown is a city rich in culture and children eager to learn and grow.
My students have worked hard this month to learn about visual arts concepts through science-inspired art lessons; through the utilization of magnets to manipulate metal objects dipped in paint on paper, blowing through straws to agitate paint on paper for an abstract creation, and learning about constructive criticism.
We have a big year ahead of us and my young budding artists are excited, hard-working, and up for any challenge that comes their way.
My Project
Learning with microscopes, magnets, clay, color-mixing glasses, a giant skeleton and properly designed lessons in art class-- changes the game.
Currently our school of 440 students has two microscopes in its possession, that were purchased by a teacher.
I'd like them to experience the examination of living and non living things through the use of the microscopes. They will then adapt their observations into an abstract translation using paint, charcoal, brushes, and oil pastels. In essence, life will imitate art.
The bowls will be essential in a three-dimensional project where students will paper-mache the interior of the bowls. The paper-mache will shrink, making the matter easy to be removed from the bowl. Students will then paint the interior of the sculpture to look like the inside of a fruit and the exterior with linear pattern and design.
In order to remind students of what they mildly understand about color mixing, the glasses and paddles will be a handy tool for them to use when we discuss the color spectrum, light's impact and their artwork.
We work on the human anatomy through the study of the human skull, brain, and muscle system. The only three-dimensional figure we currently have for use (besides ourselves) are three wooden figure-models. The giant skeleton will be a great visual to examine and utilize for drawing the figure using realistic proportions.
The clay will be used to create simulated fossils for the cross-curricular lessons I am planning in collaboration with the third grade team. The magnets will be used for lessons about magnetic and gravitational force. They will be used to move metal objects dipped in paint across their canvas.
I want my students to feel that being creative is not hard and is necessary in this fast-paced world. Thank you!
