My Project

On a daily basis I get asked the same questions by the students that I work with: "What day is it?" "Is today game day?" "How many days until game day?" Every Friday is "Game Day" for my students and they look forward to this day all week. On "Game Day," my students practice the skills that they have been learning in a game format. Playing a game with my students means that they are instantly engaged and excited. Games allow my students to apply and practice their learning in a way that doesn't feel like work. They are also learning important skills used during game play like turn-taking, being a good sport when winning and losing, following rules and playing fairly, how to decide who goes first in a fair way, and much more.

My goal for this project is to add more games for my students to practice their literacy and math skills in a fun and engaging way.

Having a stock of various games that practice literacy and math concepts allows variety and choice on "Game Day." My students love to play both card games and board games.

The students that I work with are pulled out of their classrooms daily for extra practice in reading and/or math. This instruction is done in small groups or one-on-one for a short amount of time. The students receive instruction in areas that they are struggling with by getting extra practice and repetitions. My students work hard all week on skills that aren't easy for them. Playing games at the end of the week feels like a break for them, when in actuality they are still learning and practicing while playing.
