Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders LOVE to explore books! It would be lovely to have a place to display and showcase books in our classroom.
I currently teach first grade at a Title I school on the Southside of Chicago.
I have 29 students enrolled in my classroom. The students mostly come from low-income homes and according to the Illinois State Board of Education 98% of the students at my school were considered low-income in 2009-2010.
My Project
All my students are English Language Learners (ELLS), which means that they speak a second language at home that is not English, plus they mostly come from low-income homes where they do not have much money to purchase books. In my students’ homes, books are a luxury that their parents cannot afford. Fortunately, through DonorsChoose.org we have had some wonderful donors donate picture books for our classroom, but now we need somewhere to store and display them.
Help, we are in desperate need of a bookshelf/trough for our classroom library! This bookshelf/trough is great because it will display our NEW books like the prized jewels that they are.
With your generosity, we can get a bookshelf to display our wonderful new books!
Please help foster a love of reading for my first graders; it is the best gift that they can receive!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
