Help me give my students primary novels to study throughout the course of our year, including class set of the first book in the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inquisitive and outgoing learners. Throughout a year, they have challenged themselves to grow as readers and digital citizens.
They have worked to develop a collaborative and safe atmosphere in the classroom where we can discuss texts, scholastic ideas, and real-world problems.
Within time, the students became an inseparable community of support where real-life struggles were being shared. This group has shown immense maturity in providing emotional support through their growth in middle school. Not only that, but these students also vocalize when they are struggling with something, educationally or internally. That element of education makes this group remarkable; they work to vocalize and give affirmation of their peers' self-worth and ability.
My Project
I want to create a class set of diverse books that the students can engage with throughout the year. Each text speaks to the students differently. When the students see themselves in a book, they are more likely to engage and keep reading. With these class sets, the students will be able to explore different stories!
My sixth-grade students fell in love with Ancient Greece and the elements of mythology.
Not only did they want to explore civilization, but they submerged themselves in the culture of a myth. Following this, Percy Jackson was the next text on the list and it was consumed by the students within a week. My hope is to give the students the ability to approach longer texts and give them a range of books to access throughout the year.
