This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know how excited kids are when they learn how to read? When you combine that excitement with technology you have a winning combination.
I have twenty-four first graders who are very excited about learning.
They attend school in Northern California. Our school is in a high poverty area. One hundred percent of my school receives free lunch. My students love to learn and are very excited about reading!
My Project
I recently introduced three Ipads into my classroom thanks to the generosity of a generous donor. It was an instant hit! One of my main reasons for wanted the tablets originally was for my students to have more access to Accelerated Reader which is a motivational online program which improves reading skills. I have discovered many other Apps which support the learning done in the classroom. With 24 students I would like to increase the amount of Ipads in my classroom so more students have access to the tablets. I am also requesting more books for our classroom library. They are books that feature predictable texts, which are great for young readers. I am also asking for a simple hands-on word family for my students to use.
Many of my students do not have access to the digital world at home (Internet, tablets, etc.).
These things are common in the homes of middle and upper class families. The digital world can enhance and at times accelerate learning. My students need to have access to the Apps and learning software that are available. Five minutes of sight word practice on an Ipad is much more exciting than a worksheet.
