My Project
My 5th grade class is a Sheltered English Immersion setting for newcomers to America. My students spend their days acclimating to a new country, new school, new language, and new culture. For young children, this can perpetuate something of an identity crisis when there are no bridges to their existing culture. Classroom libraries are the perfect place to provide students with mirrors of themselves, windows into the experiences and cultures of others, and sliding glass doors that open and welcome them to experience new perspectives entirely.
Every classroom should consist of a library that accurately reflects the diversity of the students it serves.
These libraries should not only be culturally relevant, but reflective of the time we live in as well. Please help me update my classroom library and provide my students with a welcoming inclusive space to be their authentic selves.
