This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 3rd graders have come to me with an incredible wealth of knowledge and questions that show wisdom beyond their years. While I am thrilled by their eagerness, teaching English and math in a dual language Spanish school has proven to be a challenge because of the linguistic demands I am making of my students. The majority of the class learned to speak, read and write in Spanish first, and come to my room with a mix of excitement and nerves about diving into English. They have all been working extremely hard in all areas and have committed to independent reading in English with challenging books. Nevertheless, I feel that I could be doing more to help them feel seen and understood as they undertake this unique challenge of learning two languages at once: English and the language of math.

By filling my library with books that more accurately reflect the students in my classroom and their experiences, I hope to continue to get them invested in their learning.

My students are mostly Hispanic and/or Black, and deserve to see themselves represented in the books they are reading. I also hope that it will inspire them to tell their own stories. Together we will create a community of worldly, curious young people that are eager to learn, grow and share their knowledge with others.
