My Project
Our students with Intellectual Disabilities are unique individuals and an inspiration. They are 11-21 years old, with a passion for the arts. They look at the arts as therapy, a way to deescalate themselves and step out of their comfort zone and be themselves without judgement. The smiles, positives attitudes, and passion on their faces show it all.
We need mirrors for our new dance program in our brand-new school specializing in students with disabilities.
Without mirrors, dancers cannot express themselves freely. They need to look at themselves and others around them for motivation. Dance is a form of storytelling and by doing so they can express themselves, look in the mirror, and use that mirror as an empty canvas where they can create something unique of their own or dance together as one.
What a difference it makes dancers able to see their reflection, how amazing they look and how coordinated they all are. It gives them more motivation, strength, and the ability to work harder and do their best. This year we are planning numerous plays. These safety mirrors help better their skills, motivation, self-confidence, and determination to be effective dancers. The passion they show looking at themselves in a mirror as they are practicing makes a difference.
There is no other way of dancing than looking into the mirror to see what is being created. They are all creating a masterpiece, they just need to see it. Seeing them happy as they are dancing and able to see themselves is vital. Mirrors have a significant impact on the dancers once they see themselves practicing.
Research shows: Mirroring in dance gains a greater sense of empathy and understanding between individuals of a group through imitating or “mirroring” each other’s movements.
